Astro Gaming A40 Review, The PC Headset You Want

If you don’t know about the Astro a40 Headset they have been and still are a staple in the PC Headset world. Renowned for build, feel and sound quality these guys really know how to get the job done. In later reviews I will be covering other models and brands ranging from inexpensive to top of the line however if you are looking for a PC gaming headset for under $100 then this could be the set for you.

Lets take a closer look and review the ASTRO Gaming A40 PC Headset:

Product: ASTRO Gaming A40 PC Headset Kit

Price: $99.99

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon.com

My Personal Ranking: 87/100

Astro Gaming A40 Review

If you are getting serious into gaming then you most definitely want a quality headset. Even a great set of speakers will not replace the experience an awesome headset will provide in game. You will have an edge up on your competitors who are not using one.

Imagine you are playing a first person shooter and you are able to clearly and crisply hear your enemy’s every footstep as you approach each other. This will allow you to determine which direction they are located in and allow you to get the upper hand and retain the element of surprise. They won’t know what hit them and your great play will allow your team to win the game.

Especially true in the case of games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and CS:GO for instance.

They look nice but are they comfortable?

I do admit the a40’s have a nice style to them and can see why they are so popular. The option to take the outside “tags” as Astro calls them off and interchange them with a different design is also an exceptional feature that will allow you to make them your own. It is fairly easy to do with the magnetic design.Astro Gaming A40 Review

What makes these baby’s comfortable is the over the ear design with breathable pads. It is also notable to say this headset is fairly light and doesn’t squeeze your head tightly, just enough. If you are a player who likes to play for longer sessions then you really do want the type of headset that fits completely over your ear. The ones that fit on top of or inside the ear are not nearly as comfortable and can at times irritate your ear/head after some time.

Cables vs Wireless

This is a battle I won’t get into in depth right here and now but I personally prefer wired headsets. I know the wire can be a bit cumbersome at times but you just cant replace the quality and reliability of a plugged in set. Not to mention you don’t have to worry about your sound cutting out right in the middle of a game because you forgot to charge the dang thing before hand!

Astro added something quite nice to this a40 that they call the “swappable cable system”. Basically on this model the cable isn’t just built into the headset but has the option for you to detach it from the rest of the cable. I find this is very clever because if you need to separate the two for any reason or if the cable itself becomes damaged you can easily get a replacement for just the cable and not the entire headset.

The new cable is constructed with a 3.5mm 4-pole jack with a volume control wheel, a in-line microphone, an in-line mute switch, and a call/pickup/tracking button. Good stuff all around.

Does Astro have good support and warranty?

Astro Gaming A40 Review

Astro seems to have a very good support base. If you really need help you can contact their support staff via submitting a request through their website. Another option would be to first look through the FAQ/Knowledge base also located at astrogaming.com.

With the Astro a40 you should also have a 1-year manufacture warranty although with all the headsets I’ve bought I’ve never had an issue. Knock on wood of course. So I am not typically worried about warranty.

Concluding thoughts:

Thank you for sticking with me up to this point during my Astro Gaming a40 PC Headset ReviewOverall I think this set would be a great purchase especially for someone buying their first good headset. At $99.99 they are very affordable for equipment of this caliber. I will say this however, Astro has recently released an upgrade to these in the form of the Astro Gaming a40 TR. The TR stands for Tournament Ready and boasts a slew of additional features. They are about 50% more expensive so it is up to you what you are ready to spend on a headset.

Headset is importnt if you’re serious about gaming. And a quality one is a must sometimes.

Great that it has a breathable over the ear design. Comfort is maybe the most important fact after quality.

And the optional wired-wireless thing is really a clever marketing tought of astro!!

1 year warranty is an icing on the cake!!!

How’s it going? The Astro A40’s are a pretty awesome gaming heaset. They are comfortable and sound great but they are also one of the longest standing most popular sets on the market. Of you are looking for the best the Astro A50‘s may be another headset to check out however they are more expensive.

      Thanks for commentin!

Enjoyed the read about the Astro a40 headset. I have been looking around for a new headset for my wife. She does on-line counselling and hope to do on-line tutoring in 2016.
I notice that many of the models these days have 3.5mm jacks to plug in to your computer. My Microsoft LX-3000 has a USB plug to connect. Which one do you think is best, USB or 3.5mm jack?

    • Anthony

      Howdy!

Thanks for the comment. I think between USB and 3.5mm it is just up to personal preference and what you need. I think 3.5mm should be just fine but if you really need to make the Astro A40’s compatible with USB you can simply use a 3.5mm to USB converter. Hope I helped and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

      Thanks again,

Hi Anthony, Your layout and color scheme is very inviting and clear. When I first saw the subject matter my eyes began to glaze over and I expected that I wouldn’t understand what I was about to read. I thought it would be a soliloquy of woofers and tweeters, sine waves and ohms. I was pleasantly surprised. Your writing is comfortable and engaging. I actually learned useful information about the Astro a40 and wasn’t a bit intimidated by the technical content. In fact, I think you have solved the question of what to buy hubby for Christmas. Thanks. Stephanie
