iBUYPOWER AM720FX Gaming Desktop Review, PC With Attitude

Today seems like a great day to do an iBUYPOWER AM720FX Gaming Desktop Review. Bringing you another cheap gaming PC review here. Even though this computer is a little bit out of the budget PC’s under $500 series that I have been on I am still throwing it in because it is close enough.

iBUYPOWER is becoming more and more known in the gaming PC market and has sponsored many pro gamers to date. They are one of the contenders in the gaming hardware arms race and it is only fitting that I include them here. Lets take a look at the nuts and bolts of this bad girl and I will help you decide if this is a worthy purchase.iBUYPOWER AM720FX Gaming Desktop Review

My Personal Ranking: 87/100

System Specs

  • Processor: AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz
  • Hard Drive: 1TB 7200RPM
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT730 2GB Dedicated Gaming Video Card
  • Disc Drive: 24X DVD±RW Dual-Layer Drive
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
  • Extras: Keyboard and Mouse Included

A lot of these lower budget gaming PC’s will have similar system specs. You can refer to my CyberpowerPC Gamer Ultra GUA880 Review that I did a short while back. They have pretty similar setups with the main difference being the fact that this one has the GT730 graphics card as opposed to the GT720. It has the 2GB of video memory instead of only 1GB but comes with a higher price as well. Later in the review I will go over this a bit more as well as the rest of the system. Read all the way to the end to find out my final verdict on this product!iBUYPOWER AM720FX Gaming Desktop Review

iBuypower has been around a lot longer then most folks realize. They have been around since 1999 and ever since have strived to bring top quality gaming machines to the market. Taking part in communities world wide has always been a long term goal for them and many people may actually think they are a new company because of their huge involvement with eSports and having heard of them for the first time there.

I don’t know if you have heard of teams such as Team Solo Mid and Counter Logic Gaming in the League of Legends LCS or other gaming organizations such as Major League Gaming BUT all of these guys have collaborated with iBuypower.

I’d have to say most League of Legends fans have heard of iBuypower if they follow the LCS because it is highly marketed and a lot of the LoL pro’s play on this companies gaming PC’s. The iBUYPOWER AM720FX is your way to get a taste of what this is like at the current cheap price of $521.87 so lets take a look at what your getting for that money.

This tower comes outfitted with an AMD FX-4300 It is a quad-core chip that runs at 3.8GHz. I honestly think this CPU is adequate for the price point of the overall system and for stomping whatever game you wish to play. If I was building a rig of this caliber I might go with something more like the AMD FX-6300 with six-cores because frankly it upholds better bang for buck. We can get into that later and for now i’ll say the FX-4300 wont let you down in this machine.

RAMGaming PC Under $500

Theres is not much to say about the 8GB of ram provided in the AM720FX. It is a standard amount to have these days and I wouldn’t accept any less. Sure it would be nice to have 16GB or 32GB but it’s not likely necessary for a long time. The RAM checks out here in my book.

Hard Drive

With a gaming PC you will be downloading and installing many games and they all take up a ton of room. 1TB is a good place to start and if you need more room in the future it is easy to add additional storage. 7200RPM is the standard you want out of this type of hard drive without jumping up to 10,000RPM and blowing half your budget. Once again they hit it on the head.

Graphics Card

Now this is where it is important to pay attention. The GPU or graphics card is the most vital piece to the gaming PC puzzle. Even in more expensive builds you will spend a good deal of your budget on the GPU if you intend to game with your computer.

I’d have to say that iBuypower proportioned the GPU evenly with the rest of the system here where as if I was building it I would have allocated a little more money towards this area.

They used the NVIDIA GeForce GT730 2GB which will still allow you to play games like CS:GO at over 60 FPS on high and be able to pretty much do whatever you want. All in all a decent card to go with this system and works well with the entire package.

Operating System

As of now the iBUYPOWER AM720FX Gaming PC ships with Windows 10. If you haven’t tried 10 yet you are going to love it. A mixture of the features from windows 8 and all the other versions of windows you gain the best of all worlds. Best part (well maybe just my favorite) is the start menu is back.

It is nice that iBuypower threw in a gaming mouse and keyboard combo with the tower. It saves you roughly $35 for similar equipment and although not the best out there it will do and should last quite a while. You could check out some different ones but in my opinion I would just go ahead and rock the ones they gave ya.Gaming PC Under $500

Why not build your own budget gaming PC?

I think there are two main reasons to buy a pre made gaming PC. The first of which being convenience. Building your own takes a lot of work. If time is of the essence then buying a retail PC is not a bad option at all.

The 2nd reason to buy a retail PC is if you are brand new to computer gaming. If this is the case then you may not want to jump head first into PC building at this point. Buying a budget gaming PC that is already built is a great stepping stone if you think you may want to get into it later down the road.

Of course if it does interest you to build your own PC you can build one that would be better then this iBuypower for under $600. There are many reasons to get into that and I do highly endorse it. I won’t get into it fully here but I can give you a few of my reasons.

The first one being there is a possibility to get more value out of your gaming PC. In other words you get more bang for buck or more performance out of the money you spend. Now this isn’t as great as it was 10 years ago but it is still true to some extent. The other thing I’d say is the higher your budget is the better this gets as well.

Another great aspect of PC building is that you get to pick out each part, piece by piece, brand by brand and insure you are getting the best quality and performance out of your gear. This tends to lead you towards a higher quality machine over all.

Lastly I will say that I love building my own gaming PC’s. There is a sense of pride that comes with designing something, putting it together and stepping back and looking at what you have created at the end. Its just flippin’ fun!

Final Verdict

Well I guess this just about wraps up my iBUYPOWER AM720FX Gaming Desktop Review. Are you ready for me to pass judgement on this computer? Well… i’ll say I am fairly impressed with this retail build at the cheap price of $699.99 on Amazon. I would say unless you choose to build your own, it would be worth buying if it is within your budget so go ahead and pick up yours today! I can’t add this to my list of gaming PC’s under $500 even because it is a bit over the mark. BUT with this PC you should be able to dominate your games and do just about anything else on it that you desire. I will see you next time my friends…and until then keep crushing those games! Once again I would encourage you to try to build your own gaming PC. At least look into it. You may get hooked!

Will this be your first Gaming PC? Either way what games are you into? If you have a current Gaming PC what specs are you running? I’d love to share in your experience so let me know! If you have any questions or comments please feel free to drop me one anytime at the bottom of this page. Likes, shares, tweets and +1’s are greatly appreciated as well.

Thank you,

This isn’t me but you can check out the video here. He makes a pretty good arguement for building your own PC. Just another option for ya not trying to scare you away for buying the iBuypower machine in my review above 😀

  • Frank

As one of your previous commenters briefly spoke about, I’m glad you did this review because there are a lot of people who have not heard of this brand and that they are used in competitions, this shows their reliability. I too second your suggestion of building ones own gaming PC, I was hooked the first time and almost immediately. And the sense of accomplishment is awesome, I’m using my baby right now to type this comment lol. The processor included with this iBUYPOWER, for my liking, is a little low, which leads me to a question. Does iBUYPOWER build machines like this that has motherboards that use Intel processors?

    • Anthony

      Hi Frank,

Thanks for the comment and I appreciate you stopping by. iBUYPOWER is a really good brand and if I were to buy a gaming machine it would probably be from them. This of course would be if I was not interested in building my own. I think iBUYPOWER uses both brands of cpu’s. I do think that at this time of commenting this specific PC is a bit more expensive then when I reviewed it even. Making the build your own option look even better. Let me know of you have any other questions man!

  • Paul

My thanks Anthony for another great review — this time the iBUYPOWER AM720FX Gaming Desktop. This seems like a really solid budget gaming PC offering. Sweet looking tower! To answer some of your questions, I already own a custom-built gaming PC (as you probably know); it’s quite a bit more powerful than this one (GTX 970 4G, Intel i5 3570K overclocked, etc.) but it also cost much more than $699.99 and so it’s not necessarily better value. This PC here isn’t something I’d be interested in at this time. I’m looking forward to reading more of your reviews man, see you around.

    • Anthony

Hi Paul I agree with you about this iBuypower PC. The AM720FX is a decent off the shelf option but you can do better for under $700 with this build for instance. The PC you have is quite a bit more powerful then either one but like you said would cost a good bit more. Thank you for reading my articles I really appreciate it and always feel welcome to drop me a comment if you have something to say!

  • Arjun

    Hi Anthony,
As a gamer, I was not aware of such product exists. So thanks for introducing me to a new product and for providing a great review for this product, I appreciate that!!!. Before, I was against AMD processors since its heating problems. Will this product overcome those problems and how fast is this processor when compared to i7…?
    Thank you

    • Anthony

      Hello Arjun,

AMD is fine as far as heat goes with the new chips unless you want to get into overclocking. Then I’d recommend a good aftermarket heatsink/fan combo or even watercooling. The processor in this computer will not match the i7 but to get an i7 your spending a bunch more money.

Thanks for checking out my article!

  • Jim

I have never heard of this brand. Thank you for introducing me to it. I am not much of a gamer these days, but being a past computer tech, I understand the tech terms.
I agree with you that 16gb would be much better for a gaming computer. But with what is in the box, it is a good price. Jim

    • Anthony

      Hey Jim,

That is so cool that you were a computer tech! I have always been interested in these things since I can remember. The iBuypower AM720FX would make a good computer for anyone that uses their computer for general uses as well as gaming so you if are in need for that you may take a look into it.

Thanks again for the comment Jim!

  • Brandon

Thats interesting that Ibuy power has been around for 15 +years and I have never even heard of them. That doesn’t mean much since I am not a huge gamer but landed on this as I was searching for better PC’s to work on and was curious what is the huge difference between gaming and and a good fast PC is it mainly ram and specific fans that make it differnt?

    • Anthony

The main thing is a gaming computer will be geared towards the graphics. Depending on what you need out of your PC, the good news is that whether you are buying a retail computer or building your own you can customize it for your needs. Building your own is more advantageous in this department.

      Appreciate the comment!
